What is a Pre-poo?

For those who aren’t sure what this term means, it’s an abbreviation for pre-shampoo which means this step is completed before your normal hair-washing routine .

A pre-poo is a treatment you apply to your hair that’ll help you detangle easier and restore moisture levels that sometimes harsh shampooing process strips away. While incorporating a pre-poo routine might seem like more work — but it’s worth the extra effort as this treatment does wonders in the end and has an extremely restorative effect on dry, tangled, and damaged hair.

What is in a pre-poo?

One of the most nourishing Pre-poo treatments involves a blend of moisturising and penetrating oils, namely, Coconut, Avocado and Olive oil. The Atara Pre-poo Treatment contains two key step we have found to most beneficial to you hair while providing maximal value for money that you won’t even get in your salon! Each Pre-poo treatment thoughtfully contains enough product sufficient for one month’s supply (obviously subject to how often you wash your hair and how much hair you have).

Step 1: Aloe vera gel infused with Tea tree, Vitamin E, Rosemary and Cedarwood oil

Pre-pooing with aloe vera gel is excellent for dry strands since it increases moisture, acting as a great conditioner. It also promotes hair growth, reduces inflammation and itchiness on the scalp, reduces dandruff and conditions your hair very well leaving it smooth and shiny. Tips for use: Part hair into sections. Take the gel with fingertips and apply directly to scalp, massaging the gel into scalp and then proceeding to distribute remaining gel down hair strand. When part of pre-poo treatment, add hot oil treatment as per instructions and leave entire treatment in for a minimum of 30 minutes. Then, rinse out thoroughly and wash hair as normal.

Step 2: Hot oil Treatment with a blend of penetrating, moisturising oils and hair -strengthening and growth inducing essential oils

The benefits of a Hot oil treatment include: 1) restoring moisture balance, thus strengthening and nourishing hair adding shininess and preventing dryness, frizziness and split ends, 2) soothing and preventing dry, itchy scalp while increasing blood circulation and, 3) softening hair for ease of detangling and overall management, helping bring brittle hair pack to life! Tips for use: Heat oil treatment by placing desired amount for treatment in a small bowl or mug. Then place it into a container of boiled water until oil is warm, but not steaming hot. After cooling it down a bit, massage the warm oil treatment into your dry hair- Start with the scalp and coat the hair from root to tip. Once hair is fully coated, wrap in a plastic cap over your hair for a minimum of 30 minutes. Then, rinse out thoroughly and wash hair as normal.

Heating up opens up the hair follicle so the product can be absorbed into your hair nicely. This treatment really softens the hair and helps it retain more moisture to feed and flourish your crown!

What should consider while applyign the pre-poo?

You ideally want to to warm up these oils to help deeply penetrate your hair shaft for the best results. It is not recommended to warm them up in the microwave! This should in fact be called a ‘warm oil treatment’ not a hot oil treatment, because you don’t want to warm the oils so much that they burn you.

Apply to hair from roots to ends, massaging into scalp and saturating ends for hydration where you need it most. You can also add the oil blend to your conditioner and then let that sit in your hair, covered with a plastic cap, for 30mins to 2 hours or, even leave it in overnight if you wish. For best results, apply it to sectioned, dry hair (for greater penetration and distribution) and gently comb out hair with a wide-tooth comb or with fingers to ensure even application.
